Last month, the children showed great interest in the ever popular topic of dinosaurs! So, as Early Childhood Educators, we took the drawing board and began to extend upon this interest by including some dino-themed activities into our sensory skills development.
We started in group discussion with the children, identifying our various senses, including sound, touch, smell and taste. We even set up a few “stations” where they could expirement and learn more about using these extraordinary senses!
Once we felt that the children had a strong grasp of these concepts, we decided to put their super skills to the test by exploring the great outdoors in search of “ingredients” for making a Dinosaur World Mobil! The children had an absolute ball discovering each piece of the dino-puzzle, including rocks, sand, pebbles and leaves which they could then use to make tiny mountains and trees! As we searched the garden together, we identified a wide range of textures, shapes, colours and sounds of each material we collected.
As curious little Early Birds, the children loved using the looking glasses while on their very important expedition, and as Parfrey Road Education & Childcare eduactors, we loved encouraging this activity which got everyone moving outside in the fresh air!
After we finished our exciting adventure, it was time to build our magical Dino-World mobil out of the natural materials we had. As we took turns putting it together, we discussed what each item represented, placing them carefully in their new home.
Finally, we added our colourful little dinosaur friends and Voila! We had our very own Dinosaur World for the children to play with and admire!
You can make your very own mobil at home! All you need is a theme (optional 😉 ), a little imagination (critical), a box or plastic tub and away you go! We’ll be sharing more of our mobil creations as we discover new learning themes with the children at our Rochedale Childcare Centre at Parfrey Road!
